Sketching Outside

Subject: Sketching Outside Fri Dec 05, 2008 9:22 am

I left the castle in the late afternoon with my sketchpad as I had no more homework to do and the common room was empty - not that that bothered me anyway. I wanted to be outside in the fresh air anyway. I sat down under a tree, tucking my long blonde hair behind my ears and chewing the end of my pencil, trying to decide what to draw.

I was walking around when I saw a girl sitting by herself. I decided to make conversation with her. "Hello." I said as I waled up to her. "How's it going?"

"G-good thanks," I stuttered, looking up sharply and closing my sketchbook with a snap. I laughed nervously and tucked my hair behind my ears again because it had fallen out at my sudden movement. I hadn't expected anyone to interrupt me, but I was glad of the company, even if I felt terribly shy all of a sudden. "S-sorry, I don't believe we've met?" I asked. It had to be the lamest start to a conversation ever, but I'm not so good at this sort of thing, as in, actually talking to people.

I smiled. "I'm Johnny Young. Nice to meet you. You don't mind if I sit here do you?"

"No, not at all," I replied more confidently this time, smiling a little and shifting to my right so he could sit down. "I'm Layla, Layla Hawthorne. It's a pleasure to meet you." I glanced over at him shyly behind a curtain of blonde hair, secretly letting a small blush creep across my cheeks. Conversation wasn't all as difficult as I'd at first thought, really. It was all going well so far - he hadn't walked off or insulted me, so I was pleased with the outcome already.

"Thanks." I said as I sat down. "It's a nice day out today."

"Mmm, yeah, it is," I agreed, nodding. I couldn't think of anything to ask back, so I just stayed silent, mostly looking down at my knees, and occasionally glancing over at him when I was sure he wasn't looking.

I smiled. "I'm the same. Sixth year Hufflepuff."
